Holsøe was a gifted Danish interior painter, born in the community of Aarhus. His fellow trainees at the academy and at the Kunstnernes Studieskole included Peter Ilsted and Vilhelm Hammershøi, with whom he was to form the elite of Danish interior painters. Holsøe captured the peaceful elegance of domestic rooms with a splendid interplay of light and darkness.
