Every year on this day I assume back on Bernie Fuchs, a wonderful illustrator who left us too quickly. As time passes I’m extra amazed with his accomplishments.Like all illustrators,
Fuchs received his share of standard projects. Highlighting a magazine write-up regarding a golf match; just how much possibility is there for glamour and exhilaration and creativity in pictures of center aged men standing about on a golf training course? The answer is: plenty, if you’re the appropriate type of artist. Fuchs’pictures pulled viewers right into the article. They gave the message importance, and included not a tiny amount of magic.
That’s a huge factor why, in that age, people felt images made a vital contribution. Today, if I often appear to fault illustrations for disappointing their potential, for being tacky or unambitious, it’s partially due to my memories of exactly how Bernie approached brand-new assignments.
I’m not recommending that Bernie’s design from half a century ago is a suitable design today. What I’m recommending is that no matter design, his aspiration for each new photo– the ideas that he felt for the job, and that he attempted to communicate– became part of what as soon as provided image its relevance.
