Illustration chronicler Walt Reed described why the 60s were wretched for picture: “Television had actually stolen the fiction publications target market and image’s previous setting as a rate setter for popular culture was usurped … Illustration’s function came to be much more incidental and decorative. Gone were the large budgets and charitable due dates for images painted in oil on huge canvases. Illustrators were painting in smaller sized range on image board using quick drying paints.
