I enjoy Mark Borgions’ image of a gorilla:

At first it looks like it’s everything about the design: the straightforward, flat geometric forms, the bold colors, that striking composition-from-above– yea, this has the sort of power you can achieve with pure, uncompromised design.Yet, underneath these abstract
shapes there’s a lot of observation about the kinds being recorded. That head seemingly so reckless and unchecked perfectly catches the prognathic form of a gorilla head. The powerful transformed wrists and crinkled fingers are a superb observation concerning a knuckle strolling simian; Borgions also highlight the opposable thumbs. The immense lower arms which dominate the photo mirror the perfect prioritization for a pet with all its stamina and dimension in its arms, and relatively little in its tiny hindquarters. The hindquarters, you’ll keep in mind, have been left out completely. Lots of people view abstract style as being at odds with representational picture production, yet
Borgions shows how a smart, talented artist can make a solid picture accommodating both.
