Roger Duvoisin (1904– 1980) was birthed in Geneva, Switzerland, and in 1927, transferred to New York for a job in textile layout. When the company folded, he determined to release a book he had actually composed and also shown for his boy. A Little Boy Drawing (Charles Scribner’s Sons) was released in 1932, and he followed it with Donkey, Donkey, which strongly established his profession in children’s books– and is still in print, currently from NYR Children’s Collection.
Roger’s signature design was vibrant, vibrant, as well as graphic, and also he had a solid sense of composition as well as design. He integrated both humour and dramatization into the lines of his art as well as delivered empathy without being nostalgic. Over the years, he illustrated and created over forty publications, including collection that featured Petunia the foolish goose as well as Veronica the noticeable hippo, folktales such as the Three Sneezes and also The Crocodile in the Tree, and also concept books such as A for the Ark.
Roger also created photos for over 140 publications by various other authors. Amongst them were the popular Happy Lion publications composed by his better half, Louise Fatio, and nineteen publications by Alvin R. Tresselt, including White Snow, Bright Snow, which was granted a Caldecott Medal, and also Hide and Seek Fog, which was called a Caldecott Honour Book. 4 of his titles were New York Times Best Illustrated Books, and also in 1976, he obtained the Kerlan Award for Children’s Literature. His work is on screen in the Duvoisin Gallery at the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers, in New Brunswick, NJ.
